Barcode Scanning

In the past forty years, barcodes have revolutionized how goods are identified, sold, tracked and cataloged. Excelitas offers various silicon photodiodes - both standard and custom - that function at the heart of the scanner engine for these devices.

Laser barcode scanners use a laser beam as a light source coupled with a reciprocating mirror or rotating prism to scan the beam across the barcode and then direct it back towards the photodiode for conversion into a useable electrical signal. Red lasers are typically used, along with a photodiode filtered to detect light at the lasing wavelength.

Barcodes were first used commercially in 1966 but, at that time, without any particular industry standards. Today, barcode scanners can read single and 2D barcodes, and even take monochrome pictures; they follow various industry standards, depending upon the country. The U.P.C. (Universal Product Code), invented in 1973 by George J. Laurer, is still used in the United States today.
